Answers to the Lead Poisoning / Avgas Sniffing Problem

ABC Avgas Lead Poisoning Story

I have just come back from working with elders and family groups on the lead poisoning, avgas problem at Galiwin’ku. Some people might remember it was on ABC news in May. http://www.abc.net.au/news/2017-05-15/avgas-sniffing-causing-lead-poisoning-emergency/8525304

I was surprised to find that none of the Yolŋu people knew what lead poisoning was about. It seems it was part of the same old problem. Yolŋu people not being able to access information from the English mainstream. I had mentioned in the last WW news that what these communities need is to be further empowered with knowledge, in their own language, to let them take more control of their own futures. Well, we found that to be true again.

On top of that we also discovered a whole range of other important issues that not only impact on Yolŋu but Aboriginal people across Australia.

Highest Rheumatic Heart Disease in the World

We are still looking for supporters who can help us turn life saving health information, structured on the people's language and worldview, into dynamic easy to access videos.

East Arnhem Land has the highest rates of Rheumatic Heart Disease (RHD) in the world. The story board below is for RHD. I have used it many times to explain the deep biomedical RHD story to Yolŋu patients and it really works. I am convinced that this story board made into a video would make a massive difference, giving thousands of Yolŋu people real life saving knowledge, around RHD, in their own language and cultural way.

If you know of someone who might be interested in partnering with us in this great venture, or if you want to make it your project to raise the money needed to develop the video please get in touch.

Health Workers, Nurses and Doctors will be able to use these videos directly with their patients, Yolŋu families who are affected will also have access to them.

Contact us now, together we can make a real difference. Please click "Read More" link below.
